A cellphone contract lets you pay for a phone and data over 24 months. It can be good value, but only if you compare carefully. Here is how to choose between Vodacom, MTN and Telkom.
What a contract includes
- A phone, which you pay off over the contract term.
- A monthly bundle of data, minutes and SMSes.
- An upfront deposit or fee, in some cases.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Monthly price | Multiply by 24 to see the real cost. |
| Device price | Compare with the cash price of the same phone. |
| Data and rollover | Check expiry and what happens when you run out. |
| Coverage | Check the network map for your home and work area. |
| Upfront costs | Deposits, connection and delivery fees. |
| Cancellation | Understand the fee if you leave early. |
Vodacom, MTN or Telkom?
- Vodacom: the largest network by subscribers, with wide coverage and many device options.
- MTN: strong network and frequent device and data promotions.
- Telkom: often competitive on price, but check coverage in your area first.
The best network is the one that works well where you live and work. Ask friends and neighbours, and test a prepaid SIM before you commit to 24 months.
Contract vs buying cash
Add up the monthly payments and compare with buying the phone for cash and using a cheaper SIM-only or prepaid plan. A SIM-only deal can be much cheaper if you already have a phone.
Know your rights
Under the Consumer Protection Act and the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, you have rights regarding fixed-term agreements and cancellations. Read the contract before you sign.
Prices and availability change often. Confirm the current price with the retailer or network before you buy.
